GTM Beautifier - Privacy Policy

GTM Beautifier is a Chrome extension that applies custom code-editor themes and minor UI adjustments to the Google Tag Manager interface (tagmanager.google.com). This policy explains what data the extension accesses and why.

What the extension does not do

  • It does not read, collect, or transmit the content of your GTM containers, tags, triggers, variables, or any other page content.
  • It does not collect names, email addresses, or any other personally identifiable information.
  • It does not sell or share data with advertisers, or use data for purposes unrelated to improving the extension.

Data stored locally on your device

The extension uses Chrome’s local storage (chrome.storage.local), which stays on your device and is not accessible to other extensions or websites:

  • Your selected editor theme.
  • A randomly generated, anonymous identifier (not tied to your Google account, email, or identity) used solely to distinguish one installation from another in aggregate usage statistics.
  • Your analytics preference (see “Your choices” below).

Anonymous usage analytics

To understand whether the extension is being used and to detect when a Google Tag Manager interface update breaks the extension’s styling, GTM Beautifier sends a small number of anonymous events to Amplitude (hosted in the EU):

  • That the extension started on a Google Tag Manager page, and which theme is active.
  • That you changed your theme, and to which theme.
  • A generic error signal if the extension’s styling fails to apply — no error messages, page content, or identifying details are included, only a fixed category label.

Each event includes only: the anonymous device identifier described above, the extension version, whether the install came from the Chrome Web Store or a development build, which part of the extension sent it (e.g. popup vs. settings page), and a rough geographic region derived by Amplitude from the network request’s IP address. No exact location, GPS data, or IP address is stored or used by us directly.

Events are sent directly from the extension to Amplitude’s EU-hosted HTTP API (api.eu.amplitude.com), rather than through Amplitude’s browser SDK. This means events are processed and stored on EU-based infrastructure, and no third-party SDK code runs inside the extension — only a single outgoing network request per event, containing exactly the fields listed above.

Your choices

Analytics can be turned off at any time from the extension’s settings page (right-click the extension icon → Options). When turned off, no events are sent. You can also remove all locally stored data by uninstalling the extension.

Third parties

The only third-party service used is Amplitude, Inc., acting as our analytics processor. Refer to Amplitude’s own privacy policy for how it handles data on our behalf.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated as the extension evolves. Continued use of the extension after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
